A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered, the son is recruited into his father’s old organization and trained by a man named Sloan to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Sounds like a good movie, add some Matrix style special effects and you’ve got a decent action flick…?

Universal and Marvel are “rebooting” the franchise this year with a new movie. Check out the previews in HD here. I gotta say for the record, i’m predicting this a major flop. Not really any kind of earth shattering prediction there, take a look at the trailer and see for yourself. Makes me worry for Ed Norton though…

When I was a kid, I lived in a neighborhood behind a dollar theater. And though I like to think those days were not so long ago, I look back and marvel at all the freedom my parents gave me. With my dollar allowance in hand, I got into a lot of movies, and, more often than not, I went by myself. From checking the Friday newspaper listings to picking out the candy I would smuggle in, the choices were mine, and, after a final, lingering glance at the movie poster as I left the theater, I still had a solitary walk home to think it all over. And so my lifelong love of the movies began by spicing up the inner life of…kind of a lonely kid. It was not until years later that I first experienced what I have come to call “Picking-the-Movie Syndrome.”

A classmate suggested we rent some videos. With my Incredible Shrinking Woman soundly outclassed by her African Queen, I discovered a new queasiness as my future non-friend cracked nary a smile over Lily Tomlin’s wacky dilemma. It was the first time I ever turned to someone mid-movie and apologized. Since that day, I have been regularly plagued by Picking-the-Movie Syndrome. Suddenly that kooky animated special I remembered fondly from many Thanksgiving afternoons past is looking really 70’s (and in a lame way), and a dorm room full of guests are already drooling into their popcorn bowls. Or, as the lights go down in the theater, I am paying less attention to the plot as to whether or not this film is striking the perfect note for the people I invited along. Is it possibly dredging up some painful memory, hitting a little too close to home? One of them laughs and my neurosis gets a 20-minute reprieve.

Last weekend I went to see Persepolis with two good friends, and as I watched those rivetting graphic novels come to life before me in a decidedly…un-festive sort of way, I felt the first waves of anxiety rumble. A few animated executions in, I recalled there had been mention of seeing Be Kind Rewind, but I had steered us to Persepolis. As I began to get the distinct feeling that one if not both of my friends had fallen asleep, I remembered that it was a Friday night, and my syndrome was in full-swing. Afterwards I found out they could barely read the subtitles because of Tall-Guys-in-Front-of-Them Syndrome [insert despondent trombone notes]. Terrific.

As we limped off to our cars, pummelled by Marjane Satrapi’s autobiography, I reassured myself that we had all seen an important film…it just wasn’t the best pick for a Friday night out on the town. And as I tried to talk myself down from my swirl of psycho-guilt, I was calmed by a moment of clarity. Certainly the best way to avoid Picking-the-Movie Syndrome is…to stop picking other people’s movies. Why do I have to be so Peppermint Patty about everything? And, hey, when in doubt, it’s probably best for me to give the neurosis a rest and go it alone (old school). Like, if I decide to go see The Savages on a Friday night.

Watching the trailer for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I am struck by how much it looks like some lost Farrelly Brothers/Ben Stiller movie. Comically vulnerable guy gets dumped and then trembles and pratfalls his way to true love with fun/foxy lady. With a cast of distinctive television actors Jason Segal (”Freaks and Geeks,” “How I Met Your Mother”), Kristen Bell (”Veronica Mars”) and Mila Kunis (”That 70’s Show”), it looks a little like action figures put through the romantic comedy motions in your sister’s dollhouse, complete with the goofiest take on a rock star boyfriend since John Corbett rocked the recorder in 2001’s Serendipity. It’s sure to be slapstick fun with a dose of heart, and I’ll totally be there, hoping Judd Apatow works his usual magic with his cast of buddies, like potential scene-stealer Jonah Hill (Superbad). And maybe Bell, so fierce and sharp in “Veronica Mars,” gets a worthy line or two. Get in line for popcorn on April 18.

If I had to name the movie I reference most often, it would be National Lampoon’s Vacation. Whether I’m reluctantly signing up for a mailer, rolling up my car windows in panic or reminding my kids that “the bed was very soft,” the language of Vacation is all around me, elevating the mundanity of my day. One especially memorable side character is Cousin Vicki, played by a 15-year-old Jane Krakowski. In her short time onscreen, she manages to stir a batch of Kool-Aid with her arm, brag that her father has declared her the best French-kisser, and reveal a shoe box full of pot to prove that being a farmer is indeed cool. Then where did Krakowski go? After many smaller roles, she made her mark in the late 90’s playing Elaine Vassal, the vaguely wacky, song-belting secretary on Ally McBeal. But I remember watching that show, thinking, “Was Vacation just a fluke? She seems really…normal now.” But having become a rabid fan of Tina Fey’s 30 Rock (NBC), I just want to give a belated shout-out to Krakowski’s triumphant return to comedic brilliance as the neurotic and vain Jenna Maroney. With pitch-perfect desperation, she hits on all the wrong men (impaired royalty, insolent teenagers, Scott Peterson), delights in even the most degrading publicity, and looks happiest when she is using her powerhouse voice to belt, and thereby mock all who belt, songs like “New York State of Mind.” So Hollywood, if you are looking for an actress to cast in a fearlessly comic role…”Can I help you with that? Please?”

This past summer my friend and I were in a theater, punchy with outrage at No Reservations. What we thought would be as guilty a pleasure as the happily massive bowl of spaghetti featured in the trailer turned out to be the most appalling bit of neglect porn served up since Gwyneth Paltrow languished away in her equally-creepy apartment in Se7en (shame on you, Catherine Zeta-Jones). So when Definitely, Maybe showed up in the coming attractions recently, I considered throwing my precious popcorn at the screen while Laura howled, “Leave that poor girl alone!” The premise is bizarre, presented as heartwarming. A charming (or horrible) dad recounts three romantic relationships to the pleasantly-resigned Abigail Breslin, and it’s all some taunting dance leading up to the promised revelation of her mother’s identity. What? Hey kid, look through his files, find your birth certificate, and move on to something healthier…maybe another alien flick. Because when you and your dad meet cute, it’s just icky. The only thing that makes me a bit curious is the inclusion of Isla Fisher, whose scene-stealing hilarity in Wedding Crashers leads me to believe she could breathe a little life into just about anything. Opens Valentine’s Day, naturally.
